Yankee Candle

Scented paraffin candles. Paraffin combustion plus heavy synthetic fragrance is a poor indoor air combination.

What the brand gets right

  • Widely available in a range of sizes and scents

What to be aware of

  • Paraffin is a petroleum byproduct; combustion releases toluene, benzene and soot
  • Heavy synthetic fragrance blends with undisclosed phthalates
  • Metal wicks historically contained lead; now zinc, but soot deposition is still heavy

Editors note

If you love candles, switch to 100% beeswax or 100% coconut wax with cotton wicks and essential-oil (not fragrance oil) scenting. Burn in ventilated rooms only.
