Cleaning
Yankee Candle
Scented paraffin candles. Paraffin combustion plus heavy synthetic fragrance is a poor indoor air combination.

What the brand gets right
- Widely available in a range of sizes and scents
What to be aware of
- Paraffin is a petroleum byproduct; combustion releases toluene, benzene and soot
- Heavy synthetic fragrance blends with undisclosed phthalates
- Metal wicks historically contained lead; now zinc, but soot deposition is still heavy
Editor’s note
If you love candles, switch to 100% beeswax or 100% coconut wax with cotton wicks and essential-oil (not fragrance oil) scenting. Burn in ventilated rooms only.
