Cookware
Cast iron, carbon steel and stainless steel are the three materials that perform well without synthetic non-stick coatings. Choose based on your cooking style and budget. Harm avoided: PFAS coatings, PTFE breakdown byproducts and aluminium contact from damaged non-stick pans.
Water Filtration
Choose filtration based on the problem you are solving. Budget pitcher options mainly improve chlorine taste and odour, while higher tiers target PFAS, heavy metals and broader contaminant reduction. Harm avoided: chlorine byproducts, PFAS, heavy metals and microplastics in tap water.
Food Storage
Glass is the simplest food storage upgrade because it is inert, easy to clean and does not absorb odours or stains. Harm avoided: BPA, BPS, phthalates and microplastic shedding from plastic containers.
Personal Care: Deodorant
Conventional deodorants matter less for aluminium alone than for fragrance mixtures, phthalates and other undisclosed additives sitting on skin daily. Unscented or fully disclosed formulas are the safer swap. Harm avoided: synthetic fragrance, phthalates, parabens and aluminium salts.
Personal Care: Shampoo
Fragrance-free or lower-tox shampoos can cut down the number of undisclosed ingredients you use every day. Check ingredients on EWG Skin Deep before any purchase. Harm avoided: synthetic fragrance, parabens and formaldehyde-releasing preservatives.
Bedding
This category is about organic cotton sheets, not mattresses, toppers or duvets. Mattresses are covered elsewhere. Harm avoided: pesticide residues, wrinkle-resistant finishes and optical brighteners in conventional sheets.
Cleaning Products
This ladder is for kitchen and bathroom multi-surface cleaning, not dish soap or laundry detergent. Choose between a simple concentrate, a refillable kit or an on-demand hypochlorous system. Harm avoided: synthetic fragrance, quats, dyes and undisclosed solvent blends common in cleaners.
Water Bottles
Stainless steel and glass are the most reliable materials for daily drinking. Even BPA-free plastics can still introduce BPS, BPF and microplastic wear over time. Harm avoided: BPA, BPS, BPF, phthalates and microplastic shedding from plastic bottles.
Kids Water Bottles and Thermos
Children drink more relative to body weight, so daily bottles and cups matter. Prioritise stainless steel bodies and minimal plastic contact with water. Harm avoided: BPA, BPS, BPF, phthalates and microplastic wear from plastic kids drinkware.
Lunchboxes
Stainless steel lunchboxes are durable, easy to clean and a straightforward school-day swap. Harm avoided: BPA, BPS, melamine and plasticiser transfer into packed food.
Kitchen Utensils: Spatulas and Tongs
Black plastic utensils can contain flame retardants from recycled electronics, especially when used around heat. Stainless steel and high-quality silicone are the practical replacements. Harm avoided: brominated flame retardants, BPA analogues and plastic particles from heated utensils.
Kids Tableware: Bowls, Plates, Cups and Cutlery
Plastic kids tableware is marketed as safe, but many products still rely on BPA alternatives, styrene or melamine. Stainless steel, glass and food-grade silicone are the materials worth using. Harm avoided: BPA, BPS, styrene, melamine and plastic wear in dishes used every day.
Bath and Shower: Scrubbers and Sponges
Synthetic sponges and plastic-backed scrubbers shed microplastics directly onto skin and into the drain. Natural alternatives clean well without synthetic fibres. Harm avoided: microplastic fibre shedding from plastic mesh and polyurethane scrubbers.
Food Wraps and Covers
Beeswax wraps are the closest reusable replacement for single-use plastic wrap on bowls, sandwiches and cut produce. Harm avoided: phthalates, plasticisers and microplastic transfer from cling film touching food.
Oral Care
Oral care swaps are mostly about reducing routine plastic waste and avoiding toothpaste formulas loaded with SLS, artificial colours or titanium dioxide. Fluoride is a separate decision, not the main filter here. Harm avoided: sodium lauryl sulfate, artificial colours, titanium dioxide and unnecessary plastic handle waste.
Dish Brushes and Kitchen Sponges
Kitchen sponges are high-shedding, short-lived plastic items that also stay wet and grimy. Wood-and-fibre brushes are the cleaner replacement. Harm avoided: microplastic fibre shedding from polyurethane sponges and synthetic scrub pads.
