Kitchen8 swaps

  • 1.Replace non-stick cookware with cast iron, carbon steel or stainless steel
  • 2.Switch food storage from plastic to glass or stainless steel containers
  • 3.Replace black plastic kitchen utensils (tongs, spatulas) with stainless steel or silicone
  • 4.Switch from cling film and zip-lock bags to beeswax wraps or silicone stretch lids
  • 5.Replace plastic cutting boards with wood or bamboo
  • 6.Switch to a glass or stainless steel kettle
  • 7.Never microwave food in plastic containers, even if labelled microwave-safe
  • 8.Avoid black plastic food trays at the supermarket (they contain flame retardants from recycled electronics)

Bathroom6 swaps

  • 1.Switch deodorant to aluminium-free and fragrance-free
  • 2.Switch shampoo and conditioner to paraben-free and fragrance-free
  • 3.Replace synthetic body wash with a fragrance-free, SLS-free alternative
  • 4.Switch to a bamboo toothbrush
  • 5.Replace synthetic shower sponge with a natural loofah, sea sponge or konjac sponge
  • 6.Switch toothpaste to SLS-free and triclosan-free

Drinking Water4 swaps

  • 1.Check your local tap water quality report (available from your water utility)
  • 2.Install a countertop or under-sink filter (carbon block or reverse osmosis)
  • 3.Replace plastic water bottles with stainless steel or glass
  • 4.Stop buying water in single-use plastic bottles

Kids6 swaps

  • 1.Switch your child's water bottle to stainless steel (Thermos Funtainer or Klean Kanteen)
  • 2.Replace plastic lunchbox with stainless steel bento (LunchBots or PlanetBox)
  • 3.Replace plastic kids cups, bowls and plates with stainless steel or food-grade silicone
  • 4.Choose fragrance-free, paraben-free baby wash and shampoo
  • 5.Never put plastic items in the dishwasher (heat releases plasticisers)
  • 6.Do not fill plastic bottles or containers with hot liquid

Bedroom4 swaps

  • 1.Switch to GOTS-certified organic cotton sheets and pillowcases
  • 2.When replacing your mattress, choose one with GREENGUARD Gold or GOLS certification
  • 3.Remove synthetic air fresheners, plug-in diffusers and scented candles from the bedroom
  • 4.Open bedroom windows for at least 10 minutes daily to clear VOCs

Cleaning4 swaps

  • 1.Switch to fragrance-free laundry detergent and fabric softener
  • 2.Replace synthetic kitchen sponges with a wooden dish brush or natural loofah
  • 3.Switch to plant-based, fragrance-free dish soap
  • 4.Replace all-purpose spray with white vinegar and water (equal parts, in a glass spray bottle)
