What it is
A lipophilic organic compound, phenolic antioxidant related to BHA.
What it does
Prevents oxidation in fats, oils, cosmetics, and industrial lubricants.
Why it’s a concern
In vitro data suggest BHT is a weak endocrine disruptor. Rodent studies at high doses have produced liver changes, though causality to human cancer is less clear than for BHA. Japan and some European markets restrict use in food applications.
