Building block for hard clear plastics (bottles, containers) and internal coating of metal food cans.
Why it’s a concern
Declared a toxic substance by Environment Canada in 2010. The European Chemicals Agency identifies BPA as a Substance of Very High Concern for reproductive toxicity and endocrine disruption in both humans and wildlife. Biomonitoring shows BPA in urine of more than 90% of the US population. Leaches from polycarbonate and epoxy can linings, especially when heated or acidic.
