What it is

An amphoteric surfactant derived from coconut oil fatty acids.

What it does

Mild co-surfactant, foam booster, and viscosity enhancer in shampoos, body washes, and baby cleansers.

Why it’s a concern

Named ACDS Allergen of the Year 2004. The allergenic component is typically a synthesis impurity (amidoamine or DMAPA), not CAPB itself. Purified grades are better tolerated. Often reacts in formulas containing formaldehyde releasers or halogenated preservatives.
