What it is
A silicone polymer made of repeating dimethylsiloxane units, a clear slippery liquid or gum.
What it does
Creates a smooth feel, fills fine lines temporarily, and provides slip in hair and skin care.
Why it’s a concern
Dimethicone itself has low acute toxicity and is generally considered inert, but it is not biodegradable and contributes to aquatic persistence. Some cyclic siloxane precursors and impurities (D4, D5, D6) are of concern, and breakdown products accumulate in sediment.
