What it does
Colourant for drinks, candy, cosmetics, and medications.
Why it’s a concern
Associated with hyperactivity and attention effects in children per a 2007 Lancet study by McCann et al., which led the EU to require warning labels on foods containing certain azo dyes. Some individuals experience hives, asthma, or angioedema. May contain benzidine contamination.
