What it is

A lead salt historically used as a gradual hair dye (“progressive hair colour”).

What it does

Colours greying hair progressively as lead sulfide forms on the hair shaft.

Why it’s a concern

Lead is a known neurotoxin with no safe exposure level identified by the CDC. The FDA revoked approval of lead acetate in cosmetics in 2018 (effective 2019) after the Environmental Defense Fund petition, noting that safer alternatives exist. Previously found in products such as Grecian Formula.
