What it is
A highly refined liquid derivative of petroleum distillation.
What it does
Occlusive moisturiser and lubricant in skin care and baby products.
Why it’s a concern
IARC classifies untreated or mildly treated mineral oils as Group 1 carcinogens (occupational exposure) and highly refined oils as Group 3. Residual mineral oil aromatic hydrocarbons (MOAH) are a food-contact safety concern in Europe; EFSA has expressed concern about accumulation in body tissues. Cosmetic-grade mineral oil should meet USP/EP specifications.
