High concernUV filter
Oxybenzone
Endocrine disruptorAllergenEnvironmental persistence
What it is
An aromatic ketone UV filter absorbing both UVA and UVB radiation.
What it does
Chemical sunscreen active and photo-stabiliser in many sunscreens and cosmetics.
Why it’s a concern
A 2020 FDA MUsT study published in JAMA showed oxybenzone is systemically absorbed at levels far exceeding the 0.5 ng/mL threshold that triggers required safety testing. Multiple studies link it to reduced testosterone in adolescent boys and altered thyroid function. Hawaii (Act 104, effective 2021) and Palau (effective 2020) have active bans on oxybenzone sunscreens over coral reef bleaching evidence (Downs et al. 2016). Key West passed a ban in 2019 that was overturned by Florida SB 172 in 2021, which preempted local sunscreen ordinances statewide.
