What it is
A polyethylene glycol ester of stearic acid with 100 ethylene oxide units, a waxy solid.
What it does
Emulsifier and texture enhancer in lotions, creams, and hair conditioners.
Why it’s a concern
Produced via ethoxylation, which can leave 1,4-dioxane and ethylene oxide as contaminants in the ingredient and the final product. Regulators including New York DEC have repeatedly found measurable 1,4-dioxane in ethoxylated personal care products. The Black et al. surveys and follow-up state testing programmes confirm the residue is widespread.
