What it is

A synthetic organic alcohol, clear viscous liquid. Can be petroleum-derived or corn-derived.

What it does

Humectant, solvent, and freeze-thaw stabiliser.

Why it’s a concern

Identified by the American Contact Dermatitis Society as the 2018 Allergen of the Year due to rising contact dermatitis rates. Can enhance penetration of other ingredients into skin. Generally considered safe for ingestion but cumulative dermal exposure is under-studied.
