High concernPlasticizer

Benzyl butyl phthalate

PhthalateEndocrine disruptorReproductive toxicant

What it is

A mixed benzyl-butyl phthalate diester, clear liquid used in vinyl and adhesives.

What it does

Plasticizer in vinyl flooring, food conveyor belts, and synthetic leather. Occasional historic use in personal care.

Why it’s a concern

BBP is classified as a reproductive toxicant in the EU. Human pooled studies report small associations between early-life BBP biomarkers and asthma or wheeze, but the results are observational and do not establish causation. EPA's TSCA finding is use-specific and excluded food contact and cosmetics.
