What it is

A mixed benzyl-butyl phthalate diester, clear liquid used in vinyl and adhesives.

What it does

Plasticiser in vinyl flooring, food conveyor belts, and synthetic leather. Occasional historic use in personal care.

Why it’s a concern

Classified as a reproductive toxicant category 1B in the EU and listed on the REACH Candidate List of Substances of Very High Concern. Animal studies report the same phthalate syndrome effects (reduced fetal testosterone, nipple retention, hypospadias) associated with DEHP and DBP.
