Phthalates

Diethyl phthalate, DEHP, DBP and others

What is it?

Phthalates are a class of chemical plasticisers added to PVC and other plastics to make them soft and flexible. They are also widely used as solvents and fixatives in synthetic fragrance, which is why a product simply labelled "fragrance" or "parfum" can contain dozens of undisclosed phthalate compounds. They leach readily from products into food, air, dust and skin.

What it does to your body

Male reproductive harm

DEHP and DBP are associated with reduced testosterone, lower sperm count, abnormal sperm morphology and testicular atrophy at high doses.

Early puberty in girls

Epidemiological studies link phthalate exposure to earlier onset of breast development and menarche.

Pregnancy complications

Higher phthalate levels in pregnant women are associated with preterm birth and gestational diabetes.

Neurodevelopment

Prenatal phthalate exposure linked to attention deficits, lower IQ and behavioural problems in children.

Thyroid disruption

Several phthalates interfere with thyroid hormone metabolism, affecting energy regulation and metabolism.

How widespread is the problem?

CDC biomonitoring data consistently finds phthalate metabolites in nearly all urine samples tested. Women of reproductive age show some of the highest levels, likely due to heavier use of personal care products. Boys are considered particularly vulnerable due to the anti-androgenic effects during critical developmental windows.

Key research

Clearance time
24 to 48 hours

Most phthalate metabolites are excreted in urine within one to two days. This is why fragrance and personal care products are such a significant source, as they are applied daily, maintaining a constant low-level exposure. Eliminating synthetic fragrance is one of the most impactful single changes you can make.

What to do

Do firstReplace synthetic fragrance with products using only essential oils or "fragrance-free" labelling
Do firstChoose personal care products with full ingredient transparency and no "parfum" listing
Next stepReplace vinyl shower curtains with PEVA-free or fabric alternatives
Do firstChoose natural rubber, wood or silicone toys for young children
Next stepUse beeswax wrap or glass containers instead of cling film
