Diisononyl phthalate

PhthalateEndocrine disruptorPossible carcinogen

What it is

A high-molecular-weight branched phthalate adopted as a replacement for DEHP in flexible PVC.

What it does

Flexibilises PVC in wire insulation, flooring, and some children’s products.

Why it’s a concern

California Proposition 65 lists DINP as a substance known to cause cancer based on liver tumours in rodents, though the mechanism may be species-specific. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission permanently banned DINP above 0.1% in children’s toys in 2017 due to reproductive toxicity concerns at higher exposures.
