Garage

BenzeneTolueneOrganophosphatesVOCs

Attached garages are a significant and underappreciated source of household chemical exposure. Vehicle exhaust, petrol and diesel storage, pesticides, paint and solvents, motor fluids, and antifreeze are all concentrated in an enclosed space that typically shares air with the home. Carbon monoxide from idling vehicles in attached garages is the acute risk; chronic low-level benzene, toluene and organophosphate exposure from regular garage use is the chronic risk.

What to look out for

Critical
Why it matters

Organophosphate pesticides inhibit acetylcholinesterase, the enzyme that breaks down the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. At residential levels, the concern is chronic low-level neurological effects, particularly in children. Glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup, is classified as a probable human carcinogen by the IARC.

The swap

Dispose of all unused pesticides through local hazardous waste collection. Switch to manual weeding, steam treatment, or iron phosphate slug pellets.

Many local councils have annual hazardous waste collection events. Store current pesticides in original sealed containers in a locked, ventilated outbuilding, not the attached garage.

Why it matters

Petrol vapour is a mixture of hydrocarbons including benzene, a known human carcinogen. Petrol stored in the garage off-gases continuously, particularly in warm conditions. Attached garages allow these vapours to enter the home.

The swap

Store petrol in approved containers in a detached outbuilding only; minimise volume kept on-site; never store in the home

If a detached outbuilding is not available, store petrol cans outside in a shaded, ventilated location. The recommended maximum for home storage in the UK is 30 litres in approved containers.

Conventional car washing products

Contains: Surfactants, solvents, VOCs
Medium
Why it matters

Many car cleaning products contain glycol ethers, chlorinated solvents and strong surfactants. These are typically used in enclosed or semi-enclosed spaces and generate inhalation exposure during spray application.

The swap

Wear nitrile gloves when using any car cleaning product; use in open air only; choose water-based formulations

A simple bucket of water with a small amount of plant-based dish soap is effective for routine car washing and contains no solvents.

High
Why it matters

Stored paint tins and solvents off-gas continuously, even when sealed. An attached garage used for paint storage exposes the household to elevated VOC levels via air movement between the garage and living areas.

The swap

Dispose of old paint and solvents through hazardous waste collection. Store remaining quantities in sealed metal containers in a detached outbuilding.

Local recycling centres accept old paint. Community RePaint schemes accept useable paint for redistribution.

Why it matters

Used motor oil contains PAHs from combustion, including benzo[a]pyrene, a known human carcinogen. Skin contact with used motor oil during oil changes is a significant exposure route.

The swap

Wear nitrile gloves for all motor oil handling; dispose of used oil at a licensed collection point; never pour motor oil on ground or in drains

Most garages and motor factors accept used motor oil free of charge. UK recycling centres also accept it.

Antifreeze and engine coolant

Contains: Ethylene glycol
High
Why it matters

Ethylene glycol is acutely toxic when ingested and moderately toxic via skin absorption and inhalation. Its sweet taste makes it a hazard for children and pets. Antifreeze stored or spilled in the garage is a contamination risk for groundwater.

The swap

Store in original sealed containers in a locked cabinet; use propylene glycol antifreeze where possible (lower toxicity)

Propylene glycol antifreeze is marketed as pet-safe antifreeze and carries a significantly lower acute toxicity profile.

Go deeper

Quick wins

Do these first. Biggest impact, least effort.

Store all chemicals in original sealed containers. Never decant into unmarked containers.
Never idle the car in an attached garage, even with the garage door open.
Dispose of old pesticides and solvents at hazardous waste collection.
Wear nitrile gloves when handling any automotive fluids.
Keep the garage door or window open whenever using any product in the space.
